OTTAWA, Ontario, March 19, 2008 — Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) 2007 Mortgage Consumer Survey shows that 78 per cent of Canadians who recently purchased a new home intend to pay off their mortgage as quickly as possible, and many have already taken steps toward that goal.
Fewer Americans applied for a mortgage last week to purchase a home or refinance their existing loan, according to a report released today by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). Purchase applications eased by 1 percent while refinance applications fell 4.6 percent.
OFHEO announced a major initiative in cooperation with the two
government sponsored enterprises (GSEs) to increase, by perhaps as much
as $200 billion, the liquidity of the mortgage-
backed securities market.
“Average mortgage rates were up for all loan products reported,” said
Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac vice president and chief
economist. “However, for the first 11 weeks so far this year, the average
30-year fixed rate is still below 5.9 percent, and the average 30-year
rate in January was the lowest since July 2005.
